Chanenath, also known as “Kitty”, is an astrobiologist, environmental microbiologist, and geobiologist. She is passionate about the field of astrobiology, particularly topics relating to the origin and evolution of life. Her PhD research involved the study of the adaptations of modern microbes to extreme environments, and relationships between microbes and minerals in relation to hot spring digitate sinter akin to morphologically and mineralogically similar structures found at Gusev Crater, Mars. Kitty received her PhD at The University of Auckland in 2022 and is joining the Bhaya lab in 2023 to work on the genomic responses and adaptation of cyanobacterial species to high light stress and nutrient deficiency, including exploring the biogeochemical cycles in hot spring environments.
